Training Needs Analysis (TNA) is a structured methodology, used to develop an optimum solution to a training need through an auditable analytical process. The process follows the sequence shown below, where the requirement is placed into context through a Scoping Exercise that develops Terms of Reference for the TNA.

The TNA then follows the stages of:

  • Operational Task Analysis to identify the tasks needed to operate and maintain a system and to categorise them in terms of difficulty, importance and frequency
  • Training Gap Analysis to identify the training gap between the target audiences’ current level of ability and that required to meet the new tasks
  • The training Options Report that reviews the training options, including the methods, resources and media required by the different options, and produces a recommended and costed solution.
  • If the TNA Report is accepted then a Training and Training Equipment Plan is raised to manage the implementation of the solution.

Training can be an expensive and time consuming part of a programme, but also an area for innovation and opportunity. An efficient TNA commissioned early in a programme can cut costs by influencing design at an early stage, by taking advantage of “make once – use many” opportunities, and by innovation in methods, media and partner selection.

A TNA also needs to be conducted and presented such that it is acceptable in style and content to its customer, e.g. for a UK MoD programme a TNA should be managed to be acceptable to the Service Training Development Teams (TDT), and solutions need to be considered against the evolving military career employment groups (CEGs) and training doctrines.

Persides has the experience and capability to manage, and execute the complete TNA portfolio and to conduct the process in accordance with the Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT). Persides also has experience of working with the Stakeholders (e.g. HQ Land, the Arms Schools, RAF Directorate of Training (Ground) in the training Defence Line of Development (DLoD) throughout every stage of a project, thereby gaining customer acceptance and improving assurance in gaining endorsement for the TNA Report.

Persides Training capability includes producing solutions that contain Re-Usable Training Packages (RTP’s) encompassing recognised “In Service” Instructional, Course and Assessment Specifications which are fully integrated with the technical solution and publications. This approach reduces overall training costs, reduces delivery times, and enhances the endorsement of the recommended solution. Persides also offers the comprehensive capability for cost effective integration of the Training within a project’s ILS programme, such that operation and maintenance tasks, maintenance policies, technical documentation and procedures, and training, are all developed within a coherent approach.

Persides is fully conversant with current training standards and can fully meet the requirements of the DSAT processes listed below:

  • DTSM 1, 3, and 4
  • DSAT QS 002:2003

Persides have recently added training to its portfolio of capabilities and have actively recruited leading TNA practitioners and Training delivery managers. On the back of this capability we have also secured a number of programmes which include a training delivery element.
