The Army’s top motorcycle endurance team has hailed a sophisticated body-worn video recorder ‘an amazing bit of kit’ after putting it to the test at a gruelling three-hour beach race.
Strapped to the back of a powerful bike, the VEEcam was pushed to the limit by the RideMX.com Royal Logistics Corps (RLC) Enduro Team at the famous Weston Beach Race 2008.
As the motorcycle ploughed through water and leapt over 30ft sand dunes along the beach at Weston-super-Mare the robust new kit produced stunning footage of the race.
Captain Rob Howard, Manager of the RideMX.com RLC Enduro Team, was delighted and amazed by the clarity and quality of the film from the VEEcam: “This piece of kit has been amazing. The VEEcam held up incredibly well through the rough Weston Beach Race and provided us with excellent uninterrupted footage which was instantly snapped up by Channel 4 and Sky Sports because it was of such high quality,” said Rob.
He added: “In the past we have bought and tried helmet cameras with self-sufficient memory card cameras but they couldn’t deal with the speed or length of races. With the VEEcam we didn’t have to worry about changing the batteries, the speed or terrain, which meant we had constant footage for the whole race.”
Rob is planning to use the VEEcam race footage for a recruitment video to attract new blood to the existing RLC Enduro Team. The team currently consists of eight talented off-road motorcyclists from the Army’s Royal Logistics Corps.

Persides is supporting fire-fighters from Avon Fire Service in a charity challenge to help disadvantaged children. Three fire-fighters from Bristol are riding mopeds from the most northern point of Europe, John O’Groats, in Scotland, to the most southern tip, Tarifa in Spain, in a bid to raise £10,000 for BBC TV’s Children in Need appeal. Dressed in fire kit and wearing bright yellow crash helmets, the team hopes to complete the grueling 2,000 miles journey in 12 days stopping at numerous fire stations on route. Thanks to Persides, the firemen will be able to record their moped marathon using VEEcam - a state-of-the-art body-worn video system.
Persides Managing Director Mark Cook said: “We are delighted to offer our support to these fire-fighters by supplying them with VEEcam equipment so they can record their exploits. It’s a fantastically good cause and we hope they reach their target. VEEcam has become a great success for us because we have managed to develop an immensely robust device, which is lightweight with maximum mobility, which can be operated hands-free in the most extreme of environments and still capture and transmit remarkably clear images. “
The challenge gets underway on Friday, October 24 and anyone wishing to donate money should visit www.justgiving.com/theslowwaydown.
Persides are identifying methods and technologies that will provide the capability to locate and track third parties/targets, both dismounted and mounted and investigating the integration issues with networking this capability. Persides will be looking at the balance of sensor systems to provide ISTAR data and identify the requirements and techniques to extract information from that data.
The unique and robust body-worn video system is being used by military and security operatives working in some of the world’s most dangerous hotspots. VEEcam is currently being used in some of the most extreme environments on earth including by military personnel operating in Afghanistan.
As well as defence operations, body-worn video recorders are proving popular with police forces. Persides is currently supplying VEEcam to North Wales, Norfolk and Surrey constabularies, following successful trials, and the company is now in discussions with a number of other police forces in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile emergency services, including fire and ambulance, are also carrying out evaluation tests and it is also being trialled by British Transport Police.
In military environments VEEcam is capable of gathering video or stills surveillance from unattended ground sensors, unmanned air vehicles and dismounted close-combat soldiers. The device is also ideal for gathering overt and covert intelligence for police forces or security guards who require the ability to reliably record skip-free, high-quality video images.
Persides Managing Director Mark Cook said: “Body-worn cameras are becoming hugely popular particularly in military operations and in the fight against crime. VEEcam has become a great success for us because we have managed to develop an immensely robust device, which is lightweight with maximum mobility, which can operate in the most extreme of environments and still capture and transmit remarkably clear images. We feel there are unlimited opportunities where this kind of equipment can be utilised. Our research and development teams are working with our customers such as police forces to provide them with bespoke equipment and software programmes to meet their individual requirements. We not only understand the technology but we also have an excellent understanding of areas such as the judicial system and how our equipment can be of benefit. We aim to offer our clients a complete end to end solution including training, logistics support and specialist advice.”
