About Persides > Capabilities > Support Solutions > Availability, Reliability and Maintainability

Achieving a high Availability, Reliability and Maintainability (AR&M) performance in a system is fundamental to delivering system operational effectiveness and AR&M is a principal driver for supportability and the Whole-life Cost (WLC) of ownership.  Effective AR&M management is thus critical to the success of a programme.

AR&M as a discipline covers the whole CADMID cycle, involving the development of concepts for maintenance, specifying AR&M performance, engineering and assessing the system to achieve the performance, and working to maintain and improve the performance through life. AR&M needs to start early in a programme to enable the design to be optimised effectively and it contributes to the development of cost-effective through-life support by generating key inputs to the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) programme.

Persides has the capability to provide:

  • The AR&M strategy vital at the concept, assessment and critical design review phases of a project. Persides understands the importance of this task and has the skills, experience and resources to plan the AR&M strategy and to generate the AR&M statement of requirements that support the design and contracting out processes, and can do this for Full Developmental or Military/Commercial-Off-The-Shelf solutions (MOTS/COTS) projects.
  • The AR&M assurance vital for acceptance of a system. Persides has a strong track record in delivering comprehensive and cost effective AR&M assurance, using techniques such as creating a robust and evolving AR&M case body of assurance evidence, and in the development and management of AR&M demonstration activities. Persides expertise can significantly reduce the risk of not meeting an acceptance criteria.
  • The through life management of AR&M needed to support capability and functionality changes over time, and legacy systems that may start to exhibit unacceptable levels of AR&M performance. Persides’ experience, investigative skills, and powerful AR&M analytical toolsets (e.g. the Relex suite of AR&M applications) enables us to rapidly identify the principle contributors to low availability, unreliability or high maintenance of operational systems, and to develop effective solutions.

Persides can provide AR&M programmes that are compliant to, or guided by international standards such as:

  • BS4778, 5760
  • DEF-STAN 00-40, 00-41, 0042, 00-43 and 00-44
  • MIL-STD-785, 1629A
  • MIL-HDBK-471, and 472

Persides personnel have the knowledge and experience to develop, execute and manage AR&M programmes covering:

  • AR&M Modelling, Apportionment and Prediction (MAP)
  • Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA)
  • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Data Recording, Analysis and Corrective Action Systems (DRACAS)
  • Reliability of software-dependent systems
  • Reliability Growth/ESS (HALT/HASS)
  • Planning and managing AR&M demonstrations
  • Producing, delivering and maintaining AR&M Cases and Case Reports
Examples that demonstrate Persides capabiity in AR&M include:
  • Pinz 2 - Conducting the AR&M programme for the Pinzgauer (now BAE Systems) Land 121 vehicle project, bidding for an Australian military vehicle replacement programme. Includes Programme planning, development of an ARM case, Reliability growth trials, DRACAS and modeling activities.

  • Portable Power Supplier - Conducting the ARM programme within the ABSL Portable Power Supplies (PPS) future power sources Technical Demonstrator Programme. Includes ARM Modelling of options, development of AR&M case.
  • FIST - Responsible for the complete ARM programme including, Planning, Requirements Definition, ARM Case, Modelling and Simulation, Trials and Acceptance .

  • FRES - Development of a System of System Integrator (SOSI) AR&M Strategy.
